Gov Buni throws weight behind LG autonomy

Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, has thrown his weight behind the move to give local government autonomy in the country.

Buni expressed his view shortly after casting his vote in the local government election at his polling unit in Buni Gari.

“When I came on board in 2019, my concept was to give autonomy to the local government. Unfortunately, six out of the 17 local governments in Yobe State can’t even pay their salaries.

“So, the wisdom behind this joint account, complementing the efforts of the local governments with the state working together in executing some projects, is an idea born out of these shortfalls,” he said.

The governor also expressed optimism about the future of local government autonomy in Nigeria.

“Our democracy is growing, and this issue will be addressed seamlessly and democratically without hitches,” Buni said.

The ongoing move to liberate local government areas from the constraints of joint accounts has been a topic of public discourse, with many viewing the move as a step in the right direction, while others hold different opinions.

It was widely reported that Nigeria’s Supreme Court had directed states to file in defense before it passes judgment on the matter at hand.
