Rivers State Governor, Siminialayi Fubara, has directed the unsealing of Saint Charles Surgery Hospital in Bonny Local Government Area of the state.
The hospital was previously sealed following an incident on April 23, 2024, where negligence by the medical officer on duty resulted in the death of a patient.
According to a statement on Monday by the state Commissioner for Health, Doctor Adaeze Oreh, the hospital management terminated the employment of the medical officer responsible for the patient’s death due to his failure to adhere to hospital policies and medical ethics.
The commissioner stated that appropriate disciplinary actions have been taken against the doctor by the Nigerian Medical Association, Rivers State Branch, following a thorough investigation into the incident.
Oreh emphasized that Fubara had issued a warning to all medical officers overseeing both government and private health facilities, stressing the need to prevent such incidents in the future.
She urged the newly inaugurated anti-quackery committee to intensify its efforts to ensure that any errant facility or medical officer is held accountable.
According to her, the office of the Director of Medical Services at the Ministry, who also serves as the chairman of the anti-quackery committee, is open daily to receive complaints from the public regarding any health worker or facility.
