FG begins construction of dam in Benue to combat flooding

The Federal Government has initiated the construction of a multi-purpose dam on the River Dura in Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State, aimed at managing the heavy water flow from the area to mitigate flooding risks.

Robert Umezulike, Deputy Director of Hydrology at the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, disclosed this on Saturday during an inspection of the Makurdi-Gboko-Katsina-Ala highway.

The highway has been severely impacted by overflow from the River Dura, causing significant disruption.

Umezulike noted that sediment buildup in the river had reduced its capacity to hold water, leading to frequent floods.

“Over time, many of our rivers have become shallow due to sediment deposits, which reduces their capacity to contain water.

“Consequently, when there is even a small amount of rain, the channels can become overwhelmed, resulting in flooding,” he said.

He confirmed that the ministry had already contracted the study and design of the dam, which will serve as a reservoir to help manage the water flow upstream.

Local leaders and residents have echoed the urgency of the project. HRH Mathias Ager, District Head of Mbaakura Ward, while speaking to newsmen, stated that floods have submerged homes, farms, and properties in the area.

He urged the government to prioritize both the dam project and the rehabilitation of the flood-damaged Makurdi-Gboko-Katsina-Ala road, which has been cut off near the Abekwa settlement.

The road’s damage has been a significant problem for residents. Motorist Terkimbi Atse, for instance, expressed frustration over delays, revealing that he had been stuck on a short stretch of road for two days, a trip that usually takes only ten minutes.
