EPL: Man City vs Chelsea – A point to prove (A preview)

Manchester City’s home fixture against Chelsea this Saturday, is surely the game everyone wants to see.

But this is not exactly because both Premier League heavyweights are necessarily rivals these days.

City have won the last three league titles in a row, seeing off Liverpool twice and Arsenal last season.

In addition to the league title, City beat Manchester United in the FA Cup final and edged Inter Milan in the Champions League final.

Chelsea on the other hand, did not even play European football last term and are still stuck in mid-table mediocrity this campaign.

So the game at The Etihad naturally should be a City win.

Pep Guardiola’s men are beginning to hit that streak of form, where they don’t stop winning. The champions now have Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland back and reenact their telepathy.

But the weight of history remains. No team has won four titles in a row in England.

With City now battling BOTH Liverpool and Arsenal in what is a three-horse race, a few pundits are waiting for them to slip up.

And Mauricio Pochettino’s men could be the potential banana peel.

Although the Blues are hardly a team to be reckoned with, they have provided glimpses of quality and a semblance of a young, exciting team.

It is instructive to note that the reverse fixture ended 4-4 at Stamford Bridge, with two former City forwards, Raheem Sterling and Cole Palmer, stepping up their game.

So City vs Chelsea might not be as one-sided as many expect. There is a lot to prove from both managers, the two teams and some of the players on show.
