The management of Benin Electricity Distribution Company, BEDC PLC, has said that the victim of electrocution at a transformer in Evwreni, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, was not its staff member.
DAILY POST reports that the deceased, simply identified as Kingsley, was reconnecting a damaged cable at the 33KVA line transmitting current to Uwheru, Patani, Bomadi, and other communities in the state on Monday afternoon when he was electrocuted.
It was gathered that residents of the community said the deceased had been known as a BEDC staff in past years before his death.
Reacting to the unfortunate incident, the management of BEDC alleged that the victim entered its facility network illegally.
In a statement made available to newsmen in Benin City, the BEDC Business Manager, Ughelli, Engr. Femi Makun, and the Regional Safety Officer, Warri Region, Mr. Solomon Eghwere, confirmed that the electrocuted person was not a staff of BEDC.
According to the statement, the unidentified person entered the BEDC network illegally. While on the pole, power supply was suddenly restored to the feeder and he was electrocuted.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was a non-BEDC staff and that his corpse had been taken away, possibly for burial, by sympathizers and community people,” the statement said.
