Edo: 17,232 motorists arrested for traffic offences in 10 months – FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, said no fewer than 17,232 motorists have been arrested for traffic violations in Edo State since January 2024.

DAILY POST reports that the
FRSC Sector Commander in the Edo State Command, Cyril Mathew disclosed this on Thursday in a chat with newsmen in Benin City.

Mathew said the offenders were arrested across the state between January and October, 2024.

He gave the breakdown of the arrested motorists as 2,141 in January, 2,112 in February, 1,725 in March, 1,768 in April, 2,242 in May, 1,318 in June, 2,215 in July, 598 in August, 1,020 in September and 1,598 in October.

According to him, the most common traffic violations in the state include non-possession of fire extinguisher, failure to install speed limiting device, tyre violation, seat belt violation, overloading, route violation, driving against traffic, use of phone while driving, among others.

He said the offenders were arraigned in a mobile court and fined in line with the offences committed.

According to him, the development would serve as deterrent to other drivers who are in the habit of traffic violation on the road.

Mathew, however, urged motorists and other road users in the state to adhere to traffic rules and regulations, and also maintain discipline on the road.

He opined that if motorists obey traffic rules and regulation and also maintain discipline on the road, the accident rate would reduce drastically in the country.
