Economic hardship: Shehu Sani questions governors’ silence over claim they received N30bn

A former lawmaker and social critic, Senator Shehu Sani, on Friday, questioned the silence of 35 State governors over the claim they received N30 billion each from the federation account to ameliorate inflation and the high cost of food in their respective states.

DAILY POST recalls that the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, said an “unverified report” showed that state governors received N30 billion each from the federation account to alleviate the economic hardship and ravaging hunger in their respective domain.

“I must say that unverified report has it that each of the state governments in the last few months has received additional N30 billion from Federal Inland Revenue Service outside their normal allocations from the Federation Account to assist them in ameliorating the food situation,” he said.

However, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State declared that there was no truth in the claim by Akpabio that states of the federation got an additional N30 billion each outside of their statutory revenue allocations.

Makinde, who is also the Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, said the state did not receive N30 billion and that his administration has been and will always be open and transparent to the people of the state.

He spoke in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Suleiman Olarenwaju, on Thursday.

But, Sani is not satisfied that only Makinde has reacted to the report, denying the claim by the Senate President.

“Akpabio made claim that N30 billion was shared to Governors. Makinde denied and disputed the Claim. Why are the other 35 Governors silent?” he wrote on his X handle Thursday.
