Cross River: Gov Otu appoints new chair of Traditional Rulers Council

Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has appointed the paramount ruler of Abi LGA, HRM Oval Solomon Osim Edward, as the new Chairman of the State council of Chiefs.

His appointment which takes effect from Friday 21st June 2024 is for a term of two years.

Over a week ago, the state House of Assembly took a resolution calling on the state governor to sack HRM Dr Etim Okon Edet, paramount of Bakassi, who allegedly defied the state laws and stayed over ten years in the office instead of the constitutional two years.

They had alleged that Edet was high-handed and reportedly manhandled a special adviser to the governor, insisting that he could not work with him.

Edet defended himself when he said that previous governors, Liyel Imoke and Prof Ben Ayade, asked him to stay on in office.

A statement signed by Prof Anthony Owan-Enoh, Secretary to the State Government, disclosed that the governor exercised his powers vested in Section 3 of the Council of Chiefs Law Cap CIS Laws of CRS 2004 in making the appointment.

“The appointment of HRM Edward is for a term of two years, effective from 21st June 2024.”
