Crisis rocks Adamawa Labour Party as LG chairmen sack state chair

Local government chairmen of the Labour Party, LP, in Adamawa State have sacked the state chairman of the party, Christopher Nicholas.

Eighteen of the 21 local government chairmen of the LP in the state gathered in the capital, Yola, and made their move against the state chairman and all the other members of the state executive committee, accusing them of incompetence.

The chairmen, led by the state chairman of the LP Association of Local Government of Nigeria, Rev Iliya Mathias, who is equally the chairman of the party in Hong LGA, said they decided to remove Nicholas and members of the executive committee because he is incapable of steering the affairs of the party.

In the text of the Vote of No Confidence read to newsmen by the Adamawa LP ALGON chairman, the party chairmen accused Nicholas of anti-party activities, alleging that he is the state chairman of both the Labour Party and Accord Party.

They also said Nicholas is high-handed both with the resources of the party in his care, and in the way he relates with party stakeholders, stressing that this had resulted in him falling out with many important party stakeholders.

They added that Nicholas lacked communication skills and ability to coordinate the party, causing the poor performance of the party in the 2023 governorship election in the state.

Noting that they would be awaiting the appropriate action of the LP National Working Committee, the Adamawa LG chairmen announced a seven-member state caretaker committee.

They named Hon Theman Jonah as the caretaker chairman, with Apwanokona Azmaveth as secretary.

Aliyu Mohammed Abubakar is treasurer; Henry Kwataden, PRO; Hajiya Zainab Ahmed, woman leader; Kamalludeen Aliyu, youth leader; and Auwal Chiroma, member.

A member of Nicholas’ executive committee, Apostle Ezra Kwaya, who had been the state organizing secretary of the Labour Party, reacted to the move against the entire state exco.

Kwaya said the move against the state party leadership came as a surprise as the local government chairmen of the party had never made any written complaint about either Nicholas or any member of the state exco.
