Court jails carpenter 18 months for burgling restaurant

A Makurdi Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday sentenced a 27-year-old carpenter, Oryiman Terkimbi, to 18 months in prison for burgling a restaurant.

The convict, residing behind Bandico Hotel in Wadata area of Makurdi, pleaded guilty to the offence.

The Magistrate, Mrs Eunice Ndaiyo, thereafter sentenced the carpenter.

The prosecutor, Insp. Inedu Friday, told the court that the case was reported on July 17 by one Mercy Dominic, who lives near Dele Bookshop, Wadata.

According to the prosecutor, the convict broke into Dominic’s restaurant located on Naka Road in Benue, and made away with some items in the restaurant,

“He took a bag of 5kg Semovita valued at N7,000, 13 bottles of red oil valued at N13,000, a bottle of Fanta worth N300, and five covers of aluminum cooking pots valued at N17,000.

“During police investigation, the defendant was arrested and he confessed to committing the crime,” the prosecutor said.

He said that the pot covers, five bottles of red oil and the bag of Semovita were recovered from him.

The prosecutor said the offences contravened Section 355, 350 and 289 of the Benue State Penal Code, Law of 2004 as amended.
