Champions League: Mourinho fails to qualify Fenerbahce for group stage

Jose Mourinho has failed to qualify Fenerbahce for the group stage of this season’s Champions League.

The Turkish club lost out following a 3-2 aggregate defeat to Lille on Tuesday.

Jonathan David’s extra-time penalty proved to be decisive in the tie.

Fenerbahce lost the first leg 2-1 last week and were on the verge of elimination until Bafode Diakite’s late own goal sent the game to extra time.

Lille have now advanced to the final qualifying round, where they will face either Slavia Prague or Union Saint-Gilloise.

Fenerbahce’s exit marks a disappointing start to Mourinho’s time in charge, as he looks to lead the club to a first Turkish title since 2014.
