CAS Abubakar urges senior officers on mentorship, discipline

The Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, has charged Air Warrant Officers (AWOs) and Regimental Sergeant Majors (RSMs) with promoting mentorship, regimentation, professionalism and effective service delivery.

Abubakar also charged them with ensuring the mentorship of junior airmen and airwomen in the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) through the sharing of information, skills, and experience.

In a statement by Nigerian AirForce, NAF Spokesman, Air Commodore Edward Gavkwet, the CAS gave the charge at a retreat for AWOs and RSMs serving in various units across the country, on Wednesday.

Given the tremendous experience and knowledge that the AWOs, RSMs, and other Senior-Non-Commissioned Officers (SNCOs) possessed, the air chief expressed worry over the observed drop in mentoring within the Non-Commissioned Officers’ (NCO) cadre and advised AWOs and RSMs to re-establish a mentoring culture in their respective units.

Abubakar described the AWOs and RSMs as the link between the officers’ cadre and the other ranks, saying they must be impartial in their duties.

The CAS emphasized the importance of maintaining and keeping high standards of discipline, noting that AWOs and RSMs are responsible for ensuring that airmen and airwomen under their command remain disciplined in the performance of their responsibilities.
