Bayer Leverkusen manager, Xabi Alonso has revealed that Victor Boniface only sustained a minor injury on international duty and can still play this year.
Boniface copped a thigh injury in Nigeria’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Rwanda on Monday.
The 23-year-old was in action for 89 minutes in the encounter.
It was earlier revealed the striker would be sidelined for the remainder of 2024.
Alonso though refused to set a timeline on his recovery, is hopeful Boniface will step on the field before the end of the year.
“He (Boniface) has a small injury in his thigh muscles,” Alonso was quoted as saying by Allgemeine Zeitung.
“But it won’t be for six to eight weeks. We hope that he can play again this year. We now have to wait and see how he recovers.”
The forward has registered eight goals and one assist in 15 games across all competitions for Die Werkself this season.
