Benue: Nigeria’s food basket under attack – CONYL demands arrest of killers

The Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders, CONYL, has decried the recent attacks and killings in Benue State communities by armed men suspected to be Fulani herders.

DAILY POST reports that barely 24 hours after over 50 persons were murdered by the killer herdsmen in Ukum Local Government Area of the state on Wednesday, about 16 others were killed in Wandor, Mbaikyor community of Gwer East LGA on Thursday.

The invaders also razed over 50 houses in the community, rendering residents homeless.

Reacting, the coalition, in a statement issued by its President General, Goodluck Ibem lamented that farmlands and food items were “destroyed by the terrorists at a time Nigerians are dying of hunger, hardship and starvation.

According to Ibem, the hunger and hardship currently ravaging “our nation today is as a result of the series of attacks on the food basket of the nation”.

“No nation can survive if it fails to protect sources of food from invaders and terrorists. Food remains the backbone of any nation and without food, no nation can survive.

“We therefore call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately release all the military arsenals against the terrorists who are hell-bent on seeing Nigerians die of hunger, hardship and starvation”, the statement added.
