‘Be patient’ – NANS to students protesting tuition fee hikes in Imo

The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has urged students of Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Imo State, to remain calm over the recent hike in tuition fees.

This came on the heels of the recent protest by students of tertiary institutions in Imo, demanding the federal and state governments stop frequent hikes in their tuition fees as well as undue extortion through handouts and textbooks in their various institutions.

The protesters, DAILY POST learnt, were made up of students from the Federal University of Technology, FUTO, Imo State University, IMSU, Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Federal Polytechnic Nekede and Imo State University of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, UAES.

NANS, in a release signed and forwarded to DAILY POST on Wednesday evening by its Vice President, Ahaneku Valentine, disclosed that it’s actively engaging stakeholders and management of the Federal Polytechnic Nekede to address the issue and ensure a downward review as soon as possible.

According to the statement: “It is important to approach this situation with patience and optimism, trusting in the ongoing efforts of NANS to advocate for fair and reasonable fees.

“NANS recognises the importance of education as a fundamental right and is committed to ensuring that every student has access to quality education without facing undue financial burden.

“Through constructive dialogue and collaboration with relevant authorities of the institution, NANS is determined to achieve a favourable outcome for all students involved.

“As the representative body of Nigerian students, NANS encourages unity and solidarity among students during this challenging time. Together, we can overcome obstacles and create positive change in our educational system.”
