The Bauchi State Government has pledged to provide urgent relief to communities affected by recent floods in the state.
DAILY POST reports that no fewer than 24 people have reportedly lost their lives so far in severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall, with Bauchi North Senatorial District being the most affected.
The Commissioner for Housing and Environment, Danlami Kawule, led a special committee tasked with assessing the extent of the damage caused by the floods in Gamawa Local Government Area, one of the flood-prone areas, on Wednesday.
The committee includes key government officials as well as representatives from the State Emergency Management Authority (SEMA) and other relevant agencies.
The commissioner explained that the committee’s formation was a result of the State Executive Council (SEC) meeting held yesterday, which resolved to expedite a report on the Gamawa flooding for immediate intervention.
Kawule assured that the government would respond swiftly to their needs.
Similarly, the commissioner for Works and Transport, Ibrahim Galadima, assured residents that the government would prioritize road repairs in flood-affected areas to ease the suffering of Gamawa communities.
In his remarks, the Chairman of Gamawa Local Government, Ahmed Madaki Gololo, expressed gratitude to Governor Bala Mohammed for dispatching a special team to evaluate the flood damage.
He revealed that the floods had claimed over 10 lives so far in Gamawa LGA alone, displacing thousands of people.
He noted that engineers from the Ministry of Works had already conducted on-site assessments, focusing on critical roads like the Gamawa-Udubo and Gamawa-Alagarno routes, pledging prompt government intervention.
