Banditry, Kidnapping: Niger Assembly demands security camp at Wayam, Rafi LG

Niger State House of Assembly has called on the Executive Arm of Government to as a matter of urgency construct a security camp at Wayam in Rafi Local Government Area to reduce the influx and attacks on communities by bandits and kidnappers.

The House also appealed to the Federal Government to deploy Security personnel to man the camp after setting it up.

This decision was reached following a Motion by Zubairu Ismaila, a member representing Rafi Constituency, under Matters of Urgent Public Importance.

He called on the Executive Arm of Government to as a matter of urgency construct a security camp at Wayam in Rafi Local Government Area and deploy security personnel to man the Camp.

Ismaila explained that he moved the motion to draw attention to the influx of bandits and kidnappers as well as attacks on communities in the area.

He said, “On Tuesday 5th November 2024 Wayam community in Rafi Local Government Area was attacked by bandits and kidnappers and this is not the first time the community has experienced such an attack

“During the last attack, seven people were killed, four sustained injuries while twenty-one people were abducted. All houses in the village were burned down, leaving people homeless and hungry. Their farm produce was also destroyed in the fire, other villages were also not spared from this ordeal”.

The lawmaker lamented that about two weeks ago, Kundu Community experienced a similar but more horrific attack as 12 vigilantes were killed and several cattle rustled.

He argued that ”unless a security camp is constructed at Wayam, residents of the communities will not have any place to call home”.

The House after deliberations unanimously adopted the prayers of the motion as captured at the end of his presentation.
