The University of Cross River State Alumni association has called on Governor Bassey Otu to dissolve the governing council of the tertiary institution.
This was contained in a communique released at the end of its National Executive Council (NEC) held on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, and signed by the National Secretary, Njang Ndoma.
The Association directed its legal team to immediately institute a legal action to stop further funding of all activities and claims of the governing council of the institution.
It accused the council of incompetence and pressurising the finances of the institution by calling for unnecessary meetings to draw sitting allowances for members at the detriment of staff welfare.
The alumni urged the governor to reconstitute the council to bring people who understand the workings of the university system on board.
According to them, for almost four years, the council attracted zero funds and projects to the university.
They insisted on the supremacy of the law establishing the University, saying that all organs of the institution, including the governing council, must respect the laws at all times.
“The governing council as presently constituted is incapable, incompetent of doing its work and is not serving the interest of the University.
“Since the inauguration of the council on the 6th of June 2020, the council has attracted nothing to the university, rather has been putting pressure on the finances of the university by calling unnecessary sittings to draw allowances to enrich members.
“We call on the governor and visitor to the University, His Excellency, Sen. Prince Bassey Otu to immediately dissolve the governing council and reconstitute it to bring seasoned people who understand the workings of the university system and with capacity to attract funds, projects and to formulate policies for smooth implementation of the ‘People’s First Agenda’ for the institution,” they stated.
