There is a heavy turnout of voters and security personnel at unit two and 14 of ward 11, in Ikono Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State where the rerun election for a House of Representatives seat is taking place.
As of 9:20 am, election materials and INEC officials were yet to arrive but operatives of the police, the Army, the EFCC, the NSCDC and the voters were waiting patiently for the commencement of the exercise.
Speaking with journalists, the presiding officer for unit 2, (Holy child primary school), Ikono, Mrs Mildness David attributed the late accreditation to lack of vehicles to convey electoral materials.
She said, “There were no vehicles to convey the election materials to this place and that was our challenge.”
A former Commissioner for Economic Development in the state, Goddy Umoh, who spoke with journalists at the election venue, commended voters for coming out en-mass to exercise their franchise.
“The voting strength in this unit (unit 002, ward 11) is little above 1000 and look at the turnout, it’s quite impressive and nothing like voter apathy. It is quite commendable,” he said.
