Nigeria’s Chukwuebuka Enekwechi has won the first gold medal at the 2024 African Athletics Championship in Douala, Cameroon, DAILY POST reports.
Enekwechi took first position in the men’s shot put with a throw of 21.20m, a new championship record.
The shot putter has now completed a hat-trick of African Championship titles, having won in Asaba and Mauritius.
He is now tied for the most gold medals by a male shot putter in the history of the championship.
In the women’s discuss throw, Ashley Anumba claimed gold medal.
Anumba produced a last-round effort of 59.30m to secure top spot ahead of another Nigerian Obiageri Amaechi who got a silver with 58.80m.
Chioma Onyekwere took third position.
