Gas flaring: Our indigenes are suffering noise, air pollution from Utorogu gas plant

Otu-Jeremi Community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State have raised alarm over the persistent gas flaring by facilities operated by NNPC Exploration and Production Limited, NEPL, and ND-Western, joint operators (OML34).

The Community said the gas flare creates very dangerous pollution in the locality, DAILY POST can report.

Speaking to our correspondent, an indigene of the community, Egufe Yafugbori said the associated environmental issues constitute serious health hazards for the host communities in Otu-Jeremi.

While noting that people working in the field are properly protected with relevant protective gears and offered quality medicare, Yafugbori said, “The majority of the poor community dwellers are exposed to the dangers in ignorance and deprivations.”

Yafugbori said the Federal Government must be serious about ending gas flaring, saying the failures to meet the repeated flares out deadlines must stop. The Communities are suffering.”

He said Utorogu field assets have been flaring gas for more than six decades, starting with the flow station in the community.

“Aside from this, the timeline of oil operations in Jeremi since the days of Shell is full of cases of oil spills due to either assets failure or sabotage that continue to ruin our rivers and lands, threatening livelihoods”, he added.
