Newcastle United legend, Alan Shearer has urged his old club to sign former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea in the January transfer window.
Newcastle lost 3-1against Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day at home.
The result leave them seven points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur who have played a game less.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has been hampered by injuries to different key players in his squad this season, including to goalkeeper Nick Pope who is ruled out for four months after dislocating his shoulder.
“I would agree goalkeeper and centre forward would be the two main priorities for me,” Shearer said on BBC Radio 5 Live.
“But good luck trying to find a good centre forward that you can bring in for a decent amount of money.”
Asked if he would sign De Gea for Newcastle, Shearer added: “Yeah, I would.
“I think Newcastle need a goalkeeper, and De Gea is out there. I know the salary would be huge but they would not have to pay a fee for him.”
