Nigerian government launches action plan on data privacy

The Federal Government, through the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, NDPC, has assured that it is working towards maximising the privacy and protection of data of Nigerians.

Vincent Olatunji, National Commissioner and CEO of NDPC stated this at the launch of the Nigeria Data Protection Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan on Data Privacy and Protection in Abuja on Tuesday.

He said NDPC is working to protect Nigerians from malicious use of their identity and unauthorised access to their data.

He said: “In the area of security, this is one area we’re also looking at in terms of data privacy, the malicious use of identity and unauthorised access to people’s data are being used for various purposes.

“In terms of jobs creation, generation of data, confidence in our businesses, the way people perceive us within and outside the country – these are the things we’re working on. The generation of 500, 000 jobs and the development of human capital are things that would be there for everybody to participate in.

“We have about 69 major initiatives and activities across the five pillars in the areas of governance, awareness and human capital development, in the area of the ecosystem and technology. We’re looking at having home-grown solutions in terms of applications that can drive a lot of things; especially, the law itself, enforcement, investigations, a lot of solutions that can come out of that. Privacy and protection should cut across all sectors.”
