Adamawa introduces bill to generate electricity

A new bill to establish Adamawa State Electricity Commission has scaled first reading at the Adamawa State House of Assembly.

The bill makes provisions for generating power by the state government for use of the people.

It scaled first reading at the House presided over by the Speaker, Bathiya Wesley, and was scheduled for second reading at the next legislative day.

The resolution to read the bill for the first time followed a motion by its sponsor and member representing Shelleng constituency, Kantomon Bulus Naphtali, during the resumed sitting on Monday.

The proposed law, tagged, “A Bill for a Law to Establish the Adamawa State Electricity Commission for the Generation, Transmission and Distribution of Electricity in Adamawa State and to Provide for Other Matters Incidental Thereto,” was crafted to establish a new commission to explore abundant sources of power in Adamawa State, according to the sponsor.

Kantomon said the commission that the bill envisages will generate electricity to boost economic activities and make life comfortable for the citizens.

He said there are multiple sources of power, such as the Kiri Dam in his constituency which can be used by the new commission if finally established to provide power for the citizens.

After reading the bill sequel to the motion to that effect by the sponsor, the speaker directed the chairman of Rules and Business of the Assembly to schedule it for second reading.
