The Nigeria Police Force, NPF, has arrested the demonstrators of the EndSARS memorial.
The protesters were arrested at Lekki Tollgate, in Lagos State on Sunday, October 20, 2024, and locked up in a black maria.
In a viral video on social media, some of the arrested demonstrators said the peaceful march was disrupted when police began to shoot and release tear gas to break up the crowd.
As of the time of filing this report, the police have not issued an official statement about the incident.
DAILY POST reports that the gathering is to mark the 4th anniversary of the October 20 EndSARS memorial.
Nigerian youths had in 2020 staged a nationwide protest with the hashtag #EndSARS against the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, an allegedly notorious unit of the Nigeria Police with a long record of abuse on citizens.
On October 20 2020, the Nigerian military used live ammunition on the peaceful protesters who converged at the Lekki Tollgate in Lagos, leading to the massacre of unarmed youths.
Following the tragic incident, Tollgate has become a symbolic site for EndSARS protests.
