Peacemaker separating fight punched to death in Adamawa

A man who tried to make peace has been punched to death while trying to separate a fight in Adamawa State.

The peacemaker, Markus Dali, had stepped between Barka Yama and Alex Tari who were exchanging fisticuffs, seeking to make them stop the fight, only to become the victim as Barka Yarma allegedly gave him the blow that proved fatal.

The three are of Sina Kwande community in the Michika Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

The Adamawa State Police Command, after arresting the 32-year-old Barka, arraigned him before the Chief Magistrate Court I sitting in Yola, on the charge of culpable homicide.

Arraigning the defendant, the prosecuting police officer, ASP Francis Audu, explained that while Barka Yama and Alex Tari were fighting on the 30th August, 2024, Markus Dali decided to intervene but the defendant gave him a blow, after which he fell down and became unconscious.

“He was later confirmed dead by a medical doctor after he was rushed to the hospital,” the police prosecutor said.

After the defendant pleaded guilty, the prosecutor urged the court to remand him in a correctional centre to enable the prosecution transmit the case diary to the Department of Public Prosecution for legal advice.

The court, presided over by Chief Magistrate Muhammed Njidda, granted the application and ordered that the defendant be remanded.
