Police arraign man for alleged child theft

The Lagos State Police Command on Tuesday arraigned a 36-year-old man, Aminu Shanaki, for allegedly abducting a child.

Shanaki is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Inspector John Iberedem, informed the court that the defendant committed the offences on September 7 at Kola Bus Stop in the Alagbado area Lagos.

Iberedem said that the defendant stole a child belonging to the complainant, Mrs Kausara Olaegbe.

He said that the defendant was caught by passers-by, who handed him over to the police.

The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 275(1)(a) and 411 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

Section 275 stipulates 14 years jail term for abduction, while Section 411 provides two years for conspiracy.

The Magistrate, Mrs E. Kubeinje, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N300,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Kubeinje said that the surety must be gainfully employed with proof of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

She adjourned the case until October 15, 2024 for mention.
