Kwara: Businesses, financial institutions closed over hunger protest

Businesses, financial institutions and shops partially shut their doors to customers in Ilorin, Kwara State capital out of fear over the nationwide hunger protest across the country.

Traffic flow was low and most eatery joints also witnessed low patronage as a result of the protest.

Major strategic points were manned by security agencies as protesters were restricted to the Metropolitan Square on Asa Dam Road, in Ilorin, the state capital.

Private businesses and financial institutions partially closed for fear of possible attack by hoodlums.

Our correspondent observed that Metropolitan Square, the designated venue of the protest, and other areas such as Sulu-Gambari Road, Post Office, Taiwo Road, Garin-Alimi and Murtala Mohammed Way, were deserted.

However all government offices visited, including courts, opened for business.

In a chat with DAILY POST in Ilorin, Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Kwara State chapter, Comrade Saheed Mustapha Olayinka, said “We are not part of the protest, but the government should do the needful by making the four refineries functional.

Also speaking with newsmen in Ilorin, a trader, Segun Sanusi, said the protest was not necessary.

He advised the organisers to adopt dialogue to resolve issues of interest.
