NYSC clears air on reported killing of female Corps member by thunder strike in Abia

The National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, has refuted reports that a female Corps member was killed by thunder strike in the Abia State Orientation Camp at Umunna, on Saturday.

“Though there was a heavy downpour in the early hours of the day with unusual thunderstorm, the only injured female Corps member was immediately stabilised by the dedicated Orientation Camp Medical Team from Federal Medical Centre Umuahia,” a statement signed by Eddy Megwa, Director, Information and Public Relations, said.

“The Corps member was immediately referred to a hospital in Umuahia for prompt medical evaluation.

“The Corps member is very stable and responding to treatment accordingly, whereas, the parents of the Corps member have been contacted and they have confirmed that their daughter is in a very stable condition.

“The blogger that erupted the information did not get the facts of the matter from NYSC before publishing.

“NYSC as a proactive organisation, is committed to the health, well-being and security of her Corps members at all times.

“The general public, especially parents and guardians of the Corps members currently in camp, should be rest assured that the security and welfare of their children in NYSC Abia State Orientation Camp is fully guaranteed.

“Meanwhile, management is calling on media practitioners, especially online bloggers, to clarify and make consultations with the Scheme on every matter before publishing misleading and inaccurate information that is devoid of facts about the NYSC.”
