Ava building collapse: How site workers escaped death

It has been revealed that about eight construction workers escaped death by whiskers at Chukwunyere Street in Aba, Abia State on Friday, after a two -storey building under construction collapsed.

The building, which was at an advanced stage of completion, collapsed on Friday night, raising fears that some people could be trapped under its rubble.

But according to residents of the area, the site workers had already closed for work on Friday evening and left for their various homes before the building collapsed.

As at the time of filing this report, no official statement has been issued on why the building collapsed neither has the contractor handling the project appeared to explain what went wrong.

However, many residents who thronged the scene of the incident, blamed the collapse of the building on the use of substandard materials.

They called on the Abia State Government to take action against quackery in the building industry.

Meanwhile, officials of Aba South Town Planning Authority have sealed off the site of the collapsed building, to allow proper investigation into the matter.

In June 2024, a three story building under construction also collapsed in Obingwu, Ukwa West LGA of Abia State, killing five site workers, as confirmed by the State Government.
