NiMET Flood Advisory: Ekiti govt initiates plans to cushion adverse weather conditions

The Ekiti State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources has announced proactive measures to safeguard the lives of residents and public infrastructures in the state following a forecast by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NlMET.

NlMET had predicted heavy rainfall and potential flooding in Ekiti and twelve other states in its recent forecast.

In reaction, the Ekiti State Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Erelu Tosin Ajisafe, in a statement urged residents to take the warnings seriously, noting that the state government has initiated efforts to forestall any adverse weather situations.

She said the Ekiti government has approved a work plan to clear blocked drainages and waterways in Ado, Ikere and Ekiti South-West Local Government and the debilitation of lined drains, culverts and access slabs in Ado, Ikere and Irepodun/Ifelodun Local government, which are considered high-risk flood zones between June to October 2024.

The Commissioner explained that the Ministry has also launched a public awareness campaign to educate residents on flood safety measures. This campaign involved information dissemination through radio announcements, social media, and community engagement.

According to her, the Ministry was working closely with relevant Ministries/Departments/Agencies and local governments to identify flood-prone areas within their jurisdiction and to coordinate advocacy campaigns and mitigation measures, specifically in Ado Ekiti.

”The Ekiti State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources remains committed to prioritizing the safety and well-being of its residents by working together with relevant MDAs/LGAs/ and LCDAs so that members of the public can effectively mitigate the impact of potential flash flooding and ensure timely responses to any emergencies that arise,” she said.
