Euro 2024: Carragher urges Southgate to sacrifice, drop two England players

Liverpool legend, Jamie Carragher, has urged England manager Gareth Southgate to ‘sacrifice’ both Phil Foden and Trent Alexander-Arnold for the Three Lions’ final group game against Slovenia at Euro 2024.

This comes after England struggled to play a 1-1 draw against Denmark on Thursday.
England will now face Slovenia in their last match in Group C on Tuesday.

They currently top the Group with four points and need a win or a draw against Slovenia to qualify for the Round of 16.

Writing in his column for The Telegraph, Carragher said: “Unfortunately, two of the best Premier League footballers – Trent Alexander-Arnold and Phil Foden – will have to be sacrificed now.

“The team’s set-up is not getting the best from them, or their team-mates. Introducing Alexander-Arnold into midfield in a major tournament was always a risk. It has not worked.”

Speaking on the wingers that should pair with Harry Kane up front, Carragher added, “I would like to see a 4-3-3 with Saka and Anthony Gordon either side of Kane.”
