The industrial action embarked upon by the Organized Labour, comprising of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and Trade Union Congress, TUC, crippled Calabar and other major towns in Cross River State on Monday.
This was as a result of total compliance by government workers.
Government offices were shut down and labour union officials went round to enforce compliance.
Banks, petrol stations, public schools and state news outfits were also shut down.
Chairman of the NLC in the state, Comrade Greg Olayi, said they have put their weight behind NLC national body.
“Even if it will take one year to achieve a sustainable minimum wage for workers, we will sustain the strike
he said.
“We just left Office of Head of Service (HOS) couple of minutes ago to ensure that there is compliance with the directive of the national body.
“Apart from those on essential duties like Fire Service and others we expect total compliance. We are moving round to ensure that every worker adhere to directives of the national body,” Olayi maintained.
Olayi stressed that the 100 per cent wage increase of N60,000 offered by the government is not workable.
