Government, private establishments in Benue join nationwide strike

The nationwide strike declared by the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, has commenced in Benue State.

DAILY POST gathered that all government offices as well as banks across the state capital were closed at about 10:00am on Monday.

Earlier on Saturday, the state President of the NLC, Terngwa Igbe had declared that the state chapter would join the strike.

The state offices of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, the Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, as well as the Benue State Teaching Service Board, were all locked up at the time of the visit.

Benue civil servants were also turned back from the state Secretariat in Makurdi in compliance with the strike order.

There is also a power outage in the state which is an indication that electricity workers have joined the strike.

Most filling stations in the state capital are not open for business, ostensibly because of the nationwide strike action.

However, commercial town service buses and motorcycles are carrying out normal services in Makurdi, the state capital.

A resident of Makurdi town who spoke on the condition of anonymity said if the government does not resume negotiations with the labour unions the strike will continue.

He called on the government to conclude negotiations with the labour union to call off the strike because of its negative impact on the masses.
