Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has urged graduates to create jobs for themselves and others.
He made the call on Saturday at the third combined convocation ceremony of Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku.
Some of the projects that the governor inaugurated include a 350-capacity lecture hall, volleyball, basketball, and multi-purpose courts, and an ICT Microsoft Certification Centre, among others.
The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Monday Onyeme, stated that “graduation is a time to set new goals and targets.”
According to him, graduates should not rest on their oars but put into practice the knowledge and skills they have learnt.
“The public and private sectors will benefit from your education and professionalism, while the entrepreneurial world awaits your ideas.
“In line with the philosophy of this administration of producing graduates with entrepreneurial skills, it is our earnest expectation that you will go out there and create jobs for yourself and others,” the governor said.
He commended the polytechnic for its achievements, asserting: “Delta State Polytechnic Ogwashi-Uku is no doubt a fast-growing institution, and I appreciate the improvements in the areas of infrastructure, capacity building, entrepreneurial and sports development.
“I appeal to the Governing Council, management, and staff of the school to improve on the work they are doing; I commend the school authority for the enabling environment and prevailing peace, which allow for serious academic activities in the school.”
Oborevwori stated that his administration would continue to create a conducive learning environment in public institutions at all levels through the provision of adequate infrastructure and equipment for laboratories and maintaining a peaceful environment for staff and students.
The chairman of the Governing Council of the Polytechnic, Chief Jonathan Arausi, in an address, called on stakeholders, corporate organisations, and people of goodwill to join hands with Delta State Government for the sustenance of the Polytechnic as a “global centre for academic excellence.”
The rector of the polytechnic, Prof. Emmanuel Achuenu, had earlier thanked Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for his commitment to the growth of education in the state.
Awards were presented at the occasion.
