Man arraigned for allegedly inflicting harm on female neighbour

A 50-year-old man, Adetipe Idowu, was on Thursday arraigned before an Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court for allegedly inflicting harm on a female neighbour.

The Prosecutor, ASP Abdullahi Emmanuel, informed the court that the defendant committed the offense on February 27, around 6:00 p.m. at Ita-Osun area, Ajamopo, Ile-Ife.

Emmanuel said that the defendant occasionally harmed one Oluwatoyin Osoba when he beat her in her stomach and right leg with hard wood until she sustained open injury.

He stated that the defendant conducted himself in a manner likely to cause breakdown of law and order in the area by physically harassing Osoba, which caused a serious crisis between him and her family.
According to him, the offense was contrary to and punishable under Sections 249(d) and 355 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2002.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to two-count charges of occasional harm and breach of peace.

The Defence Counsel, Mr A.O. Okuovara, applied for bail of the defendant in the most liberal term, promising that his client would not jump bail, but would provide reliable sureties.

The Magistrate, Taofeek Badmus, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000, with one surety in like sum.

Badmus said that the surety must swear to an affidavit of means, reside within the court jurisdiction, be of good character and with a viable address that could be verified by the police.

The magistrate, however, ordered that the defendant be remanded in Ile-Ife custodial centre, pending the perfection of his bail.

He, thereafter, adjourned the case till May 30 for hearing.
