Makinde pays additional N2bn to ex-LG bosses in Oyo

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has declared that another tranche of N2 billion has been paid to the former chairmen of local government areas in the state.

The former council bosses were sacked by Makinde in May 2019.

They were elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in 2018.

The former council bosses and the state government have been at loggerheads over the payment of their entitlements.

They had earlier urged the governor to pay their full entitlements.

Makinde, while speaking on Saturday, maintained that the sum of N2 billion was released on Friday.

He made these declarations in Ogbomoso during the burial and thanksgiving service in honour of Mama Ruth Adenihun Dare, mother of former Minister of Youth and Sports, Chief Sunday Dare.

Makinde, while speaking further, added that his presence in Ogbomoso to honour Dare, an APC chieftain, is an indication that people should not fight because of politicians.

He said: “I am sure Chief Sunday Dare must have thought I wouldn’t attend this event because we don’t belong to the same party. I tell people not to fight because of politicians because it is not worth it. This is because we do a lot of other things together behind the curtain.

“When I took over as governor in 2019, I decided to sack all the local government chairmen because we felt their election was unconstitutional.

“As a result, they also took me to court for government to pay their entitlements. We dragged the matter up to the Supreme Court level. But, on Friday, I paid N2 billion out of the debt. So, we are no longer fighting.”
