The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Obi, has said that the strict academic policies implemented by the institution have compelled students to focus more on their academic pursuits.

According to her, the policies were responsible for 32 students graduating with first class degrees, the highest number of such in the history of the university.

“It shows that the reading culture in the school has improved tremendously. This is because we have implemented what was seen as strict and controversial policies, which have now seen many students focusing on their studies.

“We now have students who would go to read at night, devoting more time to academic activities than socials,” she stated during a press briefing held in her office.

Obi averred that the introduction of scholarships also played a role in the changing study habits of students.

“This innovation has attracted more students to compete in academic studies to win the scholarship,” she said.

The Vice Chancellor further revealed that amnesty was given to 25,000 students who had one issue or another and had to abandon their studies.
