Jigawa: Gov Namadi presents N298.14bn 2024 Appropriation Bill to Assembly

Jigawa State Governor Malam Umar Namadi has presented a N298.14 billion 2024 Appropriation Bill before the State House of Assembly.

The 2024 Appropriation Bill which was tagged ‘Budget for a Greater Jigawa’ is almost 23 per cent higher than the total appropriation in the 2023 fiscal year.

The governor said the sum of almost N111.98 billion, representing about 37 per cent of the total budget, is earmarked for recurrent expenditure while the balance of about N175.44 billion, representing almost 59 per cent, is allocated to capital investments.

He explained that the sum of N131.8 billion was allocated to two critical human
development sectors – health and education, which is more than two-fifth of the total budget, underscoring the priority his government attaches to human capital development.

The combined recurrent and capital allocation to the education sector is over N95.5 billion, equivalent to about 32 per cent of the total proposed budget.

According to the governor, this has by far surpassed the upper limit of the 15 to 20 per cent benchmark promoted by UNESCO Education For All Initiatives.

For the Health Sector, the total combined recurrent and capital expenditure is N36.2 billion, representing about 12.2 per cent of the total budget – slightly below the 15 per cent benchmark being promoted by the African Union Abuja Health Declaration.

Speaker of the Jigawa State House of Assembly, Haruna Aliyu Dangyatum, commended the relationship between the executive and the legislative.

He assured of speedy passage of the budget within four weeks.
