Abia State Police Command and the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Abia State chapter, on Monday, held a talk and agreed that Tuesday’s protest to be held by the NLC members would be conducted peacefully.
During the meeting, the Abia State Police Command reiterated its commitment to ensure the protection of lives and property of all residents of the State.
In a press release made available to journalists by ASP Maureen Chinaka, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, the Command informed the public that necessary measures had been put in place to ensure the successful conduct of peaceful protests by the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, scheduled for 27th and 28th February, 2024.
The press release explained that a successful meeting was held between the CP, Kenechukwu Onwuemelie and a delegation of NLC led by Abia NLC Chairman in the state, Okoro Ogbonnaya, at the Command’s headquarters in Umuahia.
According to the release, “the NLC delegation assured the Command of peaceful protests and pledged to work collaboratively with security operatives to ensure that the protests are hitch-free in the State.
“The Commissioner of Police hereby reiterates the Abia State Police Command’s commitment to ensuring the protection of lives and property of all residents of the State.”
Meanwhile, some civil servants and some transporters in Umuahia, Abia State capital, have indicated their interest in participating in the protest, with the assurance that they would conduct themselves in a peaceful manner.
Some of the civil servants, Echere Onuoha, Chukwudi Uzodike, and a transporter, Gbaruko Olunta who spoke to DAILY POST on Monday, said they were experiencing economic hardship resulting from skyrocketing prices of food items.
