The International Court of Justice, ICJ, on Friday, granted emergency measures against Israel in a genocide case brought against it by South Africa.
However, the court stopped short of ordering Israel to suspend its military campaign in Gaza.
ICJ said Israel must “ensure with immediate effect that its military does not commit any acts” which could fall foul of the Genocide Convention.
It stated that there is “urgency” required to impose provisional measures, saying the situation in Gaza is at serious risk of deteriorating further.
DAILY POST recalls that South Africa had asked the court to issue “provisional measures” ordering Israel to stop its war in Gaza.
South Africa said this was “necessary in to protect against further, severe and irreparable harm to the rights of the Palestinian people”.
