Former Super Eagles winger, Emmanuel Amuneke has revealed that Egyptian club, Zamalek passed up the chance to sign Victor Osimhen back in 2015.
Osimhen played under Amuneke at the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile, where he scored ten goals to win the Golden Boot.
Amuneke suggested Osimhen’s name to his former club then but the forward was overlooked and he ended up signing for German club, VFL Wolfsburg.
“I don’t want to delve into many details about the matter of offering Osimhen to Zamalek, “Amuneke told MBC Masr.
“Zamalek is always my club, and whenever I see a good player, I will do the same. One of the problems we face in Africa is the lack of courage in giving opportunities to young players.
“We always look for the ready player in Africa, although the young ones are the stars of the future.
“I suggested Osimhen’s name to people at Zamalek, and the answer was ‘We are going to watch him’, but nothing happened at all.”
The 25-year-old had a difficult spell at Wolfsburg spending time on loan to different clubs before moving to Ligue 1 club, Lille.
The striker spent one season at Lille before moving to Napoli.
Osimhen helped Napoli win the Serie A title for the first time in over three decades last season.
He was crowned Africa’s Best Player at the CAF Awards 2023 last December.
