Akwa Ibom govt frowns at illegal reopening of Chinese firm

The Akwa Ibom State government has expressed displeasure over the illegal reopening of a Chinese firm, Golden Tripod Company, which was shut down by Governor Umo Eno due to allegations that its operations pose dangers to human health and the environment.

This was part of the issues raised at the end of an enlarged meeting of the State Executive Council of the Akwa Ibom State government on Wednesday, at the Government House, Uyo, the state capital.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Comrade Ini Ememobong on Thursday, the governor ordered permanent closure of the company pending when alternative land is allocated to it at the industrial estate, Itam.

“EXCO frowned at the illegal reopening of the Chinese company Golden Tripod Company, which has been accused of undertaking operations that are hazardous to human health and inimical to the environment.

“It was resolved that the facility be permanently closed down and an alternative land allocated to them at the industrial estate at Itam,” the statement said.

Also, the 2024 estimated budget was presented to the meeting by the Commissioner for Finance, Linus Nkan, with a total recurrent expenditure of N352,737,281,810, while capital expenditure stood at N487,895,128,180 bringing the total budget to N840,632,409,990.

The EXCO also directed the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to ensure strict enforcement of the extant law of the State House of Assembly which mandates all principal officers of local government areas to reside within their jurisdictions.
