The Lagos State government has warned residents to be cautious in the purchase of ‘plantain chips’ amid the spread of unwholesome practices concerning its processing.
Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency LASCOPA disclosed this in a recent statement in reaction to a viral online picture posted by an eyewitness showing a ‘poisonous plantain chips’ seller allegedly adding Polythene known as “Rubber” into the hot vegetable oil used for frying the plantain.
The agency said it is investigating the matter and vowed to punish those responsible for the dangerous practice.
“The Agency is investigating this discovery and will take appropriate actions to protect consumers and hold those responsible for the dangerous practice accountable.
“Meanwhile, members of the public are urged to assist in calling the attention of appropriate government agencies, including LASCOPA, to all unfriendly and unlawful practices among sellers of consumable items that can put consumers’ health at risk.
