A renowned lawyer, Justice Osai Ahiakwo, has commended the Federal Government for fighting corruption among top government officials.
In a statement released in Calabar, capital of Cross River State, Ahiakwo said the ongoing investigations of former ministers of humanitarian affairs and poverty alleviation, Sadiya Umar-Farouk and her suspended successor, Betta Edu, accused of misappropriation of public funds, will significantly enhance Nigeria’s image in the global index for the fight against corruption.
“Assuming these allegations are not investigated, the adverse implication will lead to devastating consequences for both the federal government and the citizens of Nigeria as the nation’s global index for the fight against corruption will increase exponentially.
“It is my view, therefore, that in order to combat financial crime within government, it’s essential to implement robust oversight mechanisms, stringent regulations, and effective enforcement measures,” he said.
He stated that in safeguarding public funds and upholding the credibility of government institutions, transparency, accountability, and ethical leadership are crucial.
He added that technology and data analytics can enhance the detection and prevention of financial crimes, adding that they can enable authorities to identify suspicious activities and take prompt action.
The legal expert said addressing financial crime in government requires collective effort from lawmakers, regulatory bodies, law enforcement agencies, like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Police and other security agencies including the public.
Ahiakwo maintained that fostering culture of integrity, vigilance, and ethical conduct, can mitigate the risk of financial crime and uphold their duty to serve the best interests of the populace.
