11 passengers killed in Abia accident

Eleven passengers have died in an accident involving a commercial bus belonging to Abia Line Transport Company Ltd., with two babies said to be among the victims.

The incident happened near the Umuika Junction along the Enugu-Aba-Port Harcourt expressway on Sunday at about 12:45 pm.

According to an eyewitness who spoke to ABN TV, the driver of the Sienna bus lost control after falling asleep and hit a truck before crashing into the bush, resulting in the deaths of the passengers.

No official statement has been issued yet on the incident by concerned authorities but an eyewitness who identified himself to ABN TV as Ochiegbu said the accident was a terrible experience to behold, adding that he notified the men of FRSC about the incident.

Ochiegbu said he was coming from the Umuahia section of the road when he saw the accident scene.

Also, footage viewed on ABN TV showed sympathisers weeping profusely and trying to evacuate the victims from the road.

As of the time of this report, neither FRSC nor Abia State Police Command have yet to issue a statement confirming the accident.
